Working with an AAC Specialist
Today we had our very first appointment with an AAC Specilist, which is speech therapist that specializes in AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) 👏🏼🙌🏼👏🏼🙌🏼 We are SO excited to have moved off of the waiting list so quickly (thank you to the person that had a last minute cancellation!) This appointment was the first of 2 appointments to evaluate Joaquin’s ability to use AAC. Our new AAC Specialist / SLP will help us learn how Joaquin will have the most success with AAC and will develop a plan that all of his team will use to help him communicate with AAC 🙌🏼 I can’t tell you how excited I am for this!!
Verbal communication will always be something we work towards but communicating with AAC will give him a voice sooner rather than later and we will take communication however we can get it!!
Joaquin walked into the building, rode the elevator in his gait trainer, stood in the waiting room, continued standing for the evaluation, and then walked back out to the van 😯 Total time: 1 hour & 45 minutes!!!! So impressed with how well he did with no breaks 💙.
If you are thinking of trying AAC I highly suggest seeking an AAC Specialist before purchasing any equipment! We already have an AAC device but it may not have been the best choice. Thankfully, his was tweaked today to be more tailored to him and his abilities 👍🏼
